Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Independence Avenue at 8th Street, SW
Washington, DC 20560

Architect: Gordon Bunshaft (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill)
Completed in 1974

The cylindrical building, almost a sculpture itself, captures the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden's essential character.  The nucleus of the collection was donated to the people of the United States in 1966 by the enthusiastic collector of art, Joseph H. Hirshhorn.  The emphasis is on European and American art from the late 19th century to the present day and includes an exceptional sculpture collection.

The red sandstone Smithsonian Institution Building, with it light crenelated towers, symbolizes the entire Institution to many visitors.  Popularly known as the "Castle", this building housed all the Smithsonian's operations when it opened in 1849.  Today, it houses the Smithsonian Information Center.  Administrative offices occupy the rest of the building.
