Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Independence Avenue at 8th Street, SW
Washington, DC 20560
Architect: Gordon Bunshaft (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill)
Completed in 1974
The cylindrical building, almost a sculpture itself, captures the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden's essential character. The nucleus of the collection was donated to the people of the United States in 1966 by the enthusiastic collector of art, Joseph H. Hirshhorn. The emphasis is on European and American art from the late 19th century to the present day and includes an exceptional sculpture collection.
